It is that time again! Time for another guaranteed great game that also happens to be free. We call those games, Fantastic Freebies. We don’t waste your time with a full review; instead we guarantee they are great! Just read the quick synopsis below and fire up the App Store, it is time to have some fun with this week’s Fantastic Freebie!

Strike Knight is a video game version of an old school (probably 80’s) bar game. You know the one, it looks like a bowling alley but you use a shuffleboard puck to hit the pins. And, instead of the pins flying everywhere they just flip up in to the game. Still doesn’t ring a bell? Well take a look at the pictures I’m sure you will recognize it.

We have reviewed a few bowling games recently but I would feel uncomfortable comparing Strike Knight to a pure bowling game. First of all the score is not out of 300 it’s out of 9600, you use a puck not a ball, and it’s a arcade game, not a sport.

The scoring is video game based. To get a maximum score you must time your shot when the flashing numbers are 800/500. The 800/500 means that if you get a strike then you get 800 points if you spare you get 500.

If you leave a frame open then you only get the amount of pins you knocked down. The flashing numbers start at 300/100 and go up to 800/500 then fall back down to 300/100 so timing is a big part of the game if you are going for a high score.

The graphics are very good for an iPhone game; very clear and well made. The gameplay takes place in a bar so it looks like you are really playing an arcade game at the local watering hole. There are bar stools in the background and a dartboard hanging on the wall. The sound effects are great. You not only hear the video game sound effects like pins crashing and the “Strike Knight” telling you good job, but you also get the background ambience of a bar. As you are playing you can hear bar patrons chatting in the background and even cheering you along. The sounds are very cool.

The controls are very similar to bowling games, where you must tap the ball/puck and then flick or slide your finger towards the pins.

Something that I really like about Strike Knight is for your second shot if the puck bounces back far enough you have to reach for it, it does not reset to the middle of the screen. I thought that was very life like and a great addition to the game.

Overall, this is a very fun game. It is a simple concept but challenging enough to keep you playing. Another aspect to the game to keep you playing is that as you improve, score high games, and close out difficult shots (splits) you will earn achievement.  There is also a great multiplayer mode where you can play and pass to the next player.  This is a good game and certainly is worth the title, Fantastic Freebie.

If you are up for some competition with your fellow iPhone and iPod Touch friends then this game is for you. Essentially what this game boils down to is Scrabble. The rules are all the same, the board even looks the same. It’s just called Words With Friends and it is fantastic.

The object in Words With Friends is to get the highest score between you and your opponent. You can obtain pretty high scores by landing on dl (double letters), tl (triple letters), dw (double words) and tw (triple words). All of these bonuses can combine as well for an even bigger score. In fact I have unfortunately been on the wrong side of an 198 point word. One word, 198 points. Needless to say, I lost that round.

This game is full of fun and very competitive and it’s a great way to pass time and keep the brain active. Another great aspect of this game is that you get to play it at your own speed. When your opponent plays a word, you will get a push notification (like a text message but free) that says it’s your turn to play. You don’t have to finish it all at one time. A game can last for an entire month if you really wanted it to, so long as both parties are still playing. This is a great game for all ages. I think its fun to see what words your friends will come up with. I hope you all enjoy this one!

QRANK is your new Wednesday night trivia game!  Honestly, I really like this game because I am a huge fan of trivia.  I love going out and playing with or against my friends at Buffalo Wild Wings.  Now with QRANK I no longer have to go out to get my trivia fix, I have it right on my phone!

In QRANK you answer 10 of the 15 questions that are provided for you.  The topics for the questions range from Sports, Entertainment and History.  In other words, topics that everyone knows something about.  You can play this against other friends with iPhones or just people in your area.  It uses the gps on your phone to get your location and it will find other people with the game.  The questions are not all easy either.  They range from the 100 level to the 500 level, thus getting harder as you go along.

I would say the thing that hooked me on this game was it is VERY current.  Just yesterday Conan O’Brien signed a deal with TBS to host his new late show and sure enough when I played this game this morning, there was a question about what network Coco signed with.  I think this game will be a great success because it hits all age groups.  Make sure your brain is ready to go when you start playing.  You only get one shot at this game per day!

Flood-It! 2 is an oldie but a goodie. I use to play the original Flood-It! on my laptop during college classes to pass the time. So it was a no brainier when I saw this was out for the iPhone. This game never gets old.

The object of the game is to get the whole screen the same color. You try to do that by selecting one of the six colors at the bottom of the screen. The first square you can change is the top left corner. From there you try to work your way across the screen by selecting the color that you think will expand your color the most.

The best part of this game is that it is different every single time. And, if you think you’ve mastered Flood-It! 2, change the board size to medium or large.  The large board size really ups the difficulty level. You can also change the color scheme and turn the sound effects on or off.

Flood-It! 2 is a great game to have and to keep on your iDevice to pass the time when ever you have time to pass.
