2D platformer’s have made a comeback on the iPhone and iPod Touch platform in recent years.  That is in part due to the iPhone’s lack of physical buttons and small screen size.  That being said, I don’t see it as a negative.  Especially when they are made as well as Rocket Boy 2D.  This game, created by indie dev, PowPowGames, really came out of nowhere and once again proves that an indie developer with a few resources and a talented team can make a really solid game.

rocketboy 2d review 1

You’ll find upon loading the game that you have the ability to start out killing zombies, aliens or the army.  Each of these enemy types brings in an assorted number of baddies.  Your job, pick a weapon and load up one of the 16 levels each enemy category has (for a total of 48 levels).  During gameplay you’ll find yourself shooting through piles of bad guys and using your rocketpack to jump over the ones you can’t kill.  You have the ability to move forward or back by simply leaning your device to the right or left.  You also will have a few power-ups that you can use throughout a level that will assist you.

This game has a lot of rpg elements that will allow you to increase your skills as cruise through the levels.  Those skill increases include increasing your health and skill with a weapon.  You’ll also find cash throughout each level that will allow you to buy new weapons at the store.  There are a ton of different weapons (35 or so) and there are several other items you can pick up with that cash that will help you on your quest to kill.

The graphics are really nice looking; extremely bright colors, mixed with moody dark numbers here and there.  While the game itself reminds me of something like Earthbound (where are my Earthbound fans at?) in its art direction, the fast paced action is more like Contra.  Along with decent sound effects and a lively soundtrack, this game is sure to please those looking for something different.  And at $1.99, it’s sure to be a good pickup for action lovers everywhere.
